Travelling in Czech Republic (not Prague)

Hello All,

welcome to my story about beautiful cities in Czech Republic.
Czech Republic is not only Prague, there are other fantastic cities worth visiting. I will name few of them.

Karlovy Vary

It is one of my favorite city. It is also known as Carlsbad and it is a town with many hot thermal springs which are very good for your health.
Let me tell you why i like it: gorgeous architecture, waffles and thermal spas!

In order to arrive here you need a car, a train or a bus.
I choose to go by bus. From Prague bus station (Florenc bus station- you can arrive here by metro and stop at the station with the same name Florenc) there are several daily buses that are going towards Karlovy vary. If you want to stay only one day, then the best option is to go in the morning so you have a full day. For this it is preferred to buy the tickets in advance.
From Prague it takes approximately 2-3 hours to arrive to Karlovy Vary. The best season to go here is during summer, but even then it might rain so better take an umbrella with you.
Last time when i was here, the stopping point was different from the departure point  so please pay attention to details.

From the moment of arriving there,it is up to you how you decide to spend the day and visit the city. I went straight ahead from the bus station and went on the streets with shops and moved on towards the thermal springs and restaurants.
There are many restaurants, most of them have fish specialties. They are not very cheap so depending on what you prefer to eat prepare your allowance ahead. Also, the shops (especially the jewelery shops and Women clothing stores) are quite expensive.

Remember that this is a town which is frequently visited by the Russian people, and generally they have a higher capacity of spending then Est-Europeans for example.
Most of the vendors are speaking Russian, German and English so it won`t be any problem to discuss with them.

What you need to try are the thermal springs. There are many of them, each one with a different water temperature. Pay attention that they are hot! and the taste is not very sweet. But it is an experience you need to try. I wanted the whole experience so i also bought a special cup that helps you drink the water, a very cute mug.

There is also a funicular that takes up to the hill and the view it is quite nice. This is a city that you must visit while you are in Czech Republic.
And please!!! do not forget to try the waffles fresh made.

Český Krumlov
Again, a personal favorite :)
It is quite far from Prague. It took me 4-5 hours to arrive here but it is worthy, each minute.
There are 3 ways of arriving here: by car, train or by bus. I choose the last option and it was excellent. Czech rep. has a good travel agency / bus agency called Student Agency. You can not miss the buses as they are all yellow. Besides the internal routes, they can go also to Austria, Slovakia, Germany and other countries. The prices are reasonable and the conditions are great.
In case you cannot book a ticket through his agency, just go to Florenc Bus station from Prague and from there are several other agencies that are going into same directions. It is better to buy upfront a ticket as you never know how crowded can be.
Krumlov is a medieval town with beautiful building, a town you can see in movies.
The old part of the town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Český Krumlov Castle is quite large in comparison with the size of the town, but from here comes its magic.
You can find a beautiful garden in the summer, a river that crosses the town, a bridge that connects the sides of the city, and of course the castle.

The reason I have visited the town was the well known Five-Petal Rose Festival (the name is coming from the Rožmberk crest of a 5 petal red rose). The festival is held each year, at different dates, usually at the end if the summer, but for exact dates it is better you check the web-site: http://www.ckrumlov.info/docs/en/spr_2011_20101207110157.xml
During the festival, the whole city is full with artists, music, theater, dancing, and horse tournaments.  The local people are dressed in costumes from the Middle Ages and parades are held during the night. The festival is ending with a firework spectacle above the castle.

When I entered the city I had to pay a fee, probably around 10 Euros and I was given a bracelet with what I could exit and enter the city for as many times I wanted.
There were people with canoes and kayaks and you can rent them also. You can use them on the river that crosses the city.
If you have a car, then you should know that close to Krumlov is one of the oldest Bohemian's monasteries: Zlata Koruna. As I did not had a car I could not visited it, but if you have time and possibility, please do so.
Quite close also to Krumlov (~30 km) is Hluboká Castle.

Again if you have a car, bike, etc please visit Sumava National Park, which is close to Krumlov city and is the largest national park. And also you can take a trip to Lake Lipno.

Hluboká Castle

It is one amazing castle, created to look after Windsor castle. The pictures are saying everything. You can visit also the town close to it: České Budějovice.

Karlstejn Castle

Can I say this is also one of my favorite places from Czech Republic?
You can arrive quite easily from Prague by taking the train to Karlstein station. It is a short distance, approx. 1 hour so pay attention to the stations.

I order to arrive to castle you need to walk around 30 min up the hill to the castle. The castle itself it is made from individual buildings and not all of them can be visited.

There are guided tours in English which are quite good.
The castle was used as the place to keep the jewels, coronation objects and other royal pieces. The castle was founded in 1348.
The tallest building is the Great tower, which I could not visit, as you need to make a special reservation. Then, the other buildings are the Marian tower and the Well tower.
What was really nice was the fact that during the time I visited the castle, a wedding was held. I could not think of a more romantic place.

More about the history of the castle you can find on the links below.

  1. I was in there and I think that the best city outside Prague is Terezin. There is so much history there. There are a lot of museums about World War II. There is a nice hotel there which is very similar to a hotel in palermo I stayed in once when I went to Argentina. It was such a classy place!
