Visiting Luxembourg and its surroundings

Hi all,

here are some details about Luxembourg City and my trip there.

How to arrive:

Depending on your location you can fly directly to Luxembourg, but the airport (Findel Airport) is not that big. Being bordered by France, Belgium and Germany the easiest and cheap way to arrive is actually by taking a flight that is landing in Brussels or Frankfurt. From there you can take the trains or the shuttle buses that takes you directly to Luxembourg.

You can get to Luxembourg City by taking City Bus no. 16. The ticket price is around 2 € for a two-hour journey. Also you can take the taxi, but it is more expensive, around 15-25 euro.
The buses operate weekdays between 5.28am and 9.09pm, every 15 minutes, and Sundays between 6.24am and 21.58pm, every 30 minute. Most buses stop nearby the center of the city or nearby the train station area. If you want to buy 10 tickets, you will receive a 20% discount.
During my trip, I took the train from Brussels Gare du Midi to Luxembourg train station. It is a very safe and nice way to see the landscape from the 2 countries.
Where to stay:
The hotels in Luxembourg are quite expensive. Depending on your budget you can choose a hostel, a 2 stars hotel or a luxury one. My advice, check on www.tripadvisor.com  or on www.booking.com.
I prefer to stay at an Ibis hotel (or one from Accor group). They are cheap and clean and depending on the time when you book you can find good packages.

What to see:
Luxembourg is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Even if it is a small city there are several nice places and parks that you can see.
You need to know that the town is divided into several parts, and the most important ones are:
  • Ville Haute ("High City"), the medieval town center.
  • Ville Basse ("Low City"), where the river is.
  • Kirchberg, the modern city full of European Union buildings, across the Red Bridge to the east. Is the place of the European institutions in Luxembourg (Parliament, Court of Justice, Court of Auditors, European Investment Bank). There are also present some modern sculptures.

Grund (in Luxembourgish, Gronn)  is found in the center of Luxembourg City. It's present on the shores of the Alzette River. The area is popular for nightlife and cultural events, and it can be accessed via an elevator which descends through the cliff of the Old City Wall. In the old town is where you will find most of the shops (usually expensive), as well as bars and restaurants.

The Grand Ducal Palace (Palais Grand-Ducal) is one of the top attractions maybe because the royal family of the Grand Duchy still lives here.

Museums:
1      Mudam Luxembourg - Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean-contemporary art –very nice inside and outside
2      National Museum of History and Art (MNHA)
3      History Museum of the City of Luxembourg

Parks:
The Municipal Park of Luxembourg it is bordered by Boulevard Price Henry and by the Alzette and Petrusse Rivers valleys.

Merl Park it is bordered by Boulevards 10 Septembre, Pierre Dupong, Guillaume and by Rue Bragance. It has a lake and it is very nice.

Tony Neuman Park is located in the Limpertsberg district, has modern sculptures.
Klosegroendchen Park is located in the Kirchberg area, it is a dune-like park having different vegetation and stone sculptures.

Tips:
Most of the people are speaking English, but if you know French, German or Portuguese is perfect also.
Do not forget to buy some souvenirs from the center of the town, from the small shops.

Other Destinations nearby Luxembourg
There are several nice cities near Luxembourg, where you can arrive by train, bus or by car: Trier, Metz, Strasbourg Utrecht, Amsterdam, the Hague are some of them.

Trips to the Ardennes region (by car is preferred)
Ardennes is located on the north side of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The region is crossed by many rivers and valleys. Vianden and Clervaux are the most significant towns in this region.
Vianden is a medieval town.  The trip can take about one hour by bus from the capital.
Vianden Castle it is a significant place to visit. The castle displays a collection of armors and arms.
Also, you can visit the Victor Hugo Museum.
In Vianden it exists the only funicular in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
The Indian Forest Park is also worth a visit.

Trips to Trier
It is supposed to be the oldest city of Germany. It is also the birthplace of Karl Marx. Very nice city to see, with better prices at restaurants & shops than in Luxembourg.
Places to see are:
The Porta Nigra,

  Palace of Trier,

The Cathedral of Trier,

Roman baths,

Hauptmarkt .

The Trier Cathedral is a Roman Catholic Church which dates back to Roman times and is home to the Holy Tunic. In Catholic tradition it is said to be the robe Jesus was wearing when he died. It is only exhibited at irregular intervals.
